Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is our pleasure to cordially invite you to the 11th Bridging Eastern and Western Psychiatry Annual Meeting which will take place from 26-29 September, 2008 in Antalya, Turkey. After a successful series of ten meetings, we continue to strive to strengthen scientific exchange between East and West in order to implement and adapt common practice, research, academic and other strategies. We now have our journal "Bridging Eastern and Western Psychiatry/"
since 2003 published both in English and Russian languages and our web portal (www.psyter.org) has included Italian, English, Ukranian, Porteguese, Polish, Russian and Turkish editions.
The theme of our meeting will be "Bipolar Disorder: Bridging the Gap". Bipolar disorder is a chronic disorder that is prevalent worldwide, afflicting both males and females from early childhood to late life, and is associated with significant risk for morbidity and suicide. However, it has only recently started to receive the necessary attention from clinicians and researchers and we still have a lot to learn about the characteristics of bipolar disorder. We will have a unique opportunity to bring Eastern and Western practices and experiences together at this meeting and we hope to bridge the gap in our knowledge about the two poles of this condition as well as increase our understanding about regional differences.
The conference will be held over 4 days and we are planning a stimulating blend of high level science from a prestigious group of speakers and updates on cutting edge research through a condense program. Outstanding local & regional & global experts and researchers will be invited to address these topics. Furthermore, we will offer time for discussion of these and other topics in detail in several sessions and the conference sessions will include plenary lectures, rapid communication sessions, posters, workshops, meet the expert, and advocacy forum.
The scientific committee has chosen to focus on a number of topics covering broad areas of Bipolar Disorder including:
- Epidemiology
- Diagnostic challenges & comorbidities
- Bipolar Depression & Schizoaffective Disorder
- Across-the-life-span & gender issues (Children, Adolescents, Adults, Females, and Elderly)
- Treatment of Bipolar Disorder (Pharmacotherapy, Psychotherapies, and Other Modalities)
- Update on safe practices (Side Effects of Medications, Suicide, and Forensic Issues)
- Short- & Long-term Outcomes of Bipolar Disorder
- Translational Neuroscience & Genetics
- Service Developments
We will also meet experts and colleagues from around the world and make new ones in the relaxed and friendly atmoshphere of Turkey, the geographic and cultural bridge between Europe and Asia where East meets West. Antalya "Turkish Riviera" assumes its name with its numerous archaeological traces and natural beauties. In 1st century BC the Pergamum king Attalus ordered his men to find the most beautiful piece of land; the heaven on earth and after a long search, they discovered this land and said "This must be 'Heaven' " and King Attalus founded the city giving it the name "Attaleia". Unique harmony of the sparkling sea, sun, mysteries of an important history and nature continue to make Antalya a tranquil retreat of heaven with the most beautiful and clear coastline.
We hope that you will participate actively in the Meeting with papers, lectures, symposia, work shops, and attendance at the rich scientific program and we would appreciate if you can contact us as early as possible with your suggestions and proposals. Come to Antalya in September 2008 and you will be the recipient of a high quality event and together we will have the opportunity to share global knowledge and expertise in bipolar disorder and enjoy the beautiful Antalya.
We very much personally look forward to welcoming you,
Dr. Rasim Somer Diler
